Indoor Outdoor Retreat at Peacock Gap 

This project in the Peacock Gap area of San Rafael entailed creation of a Guest Suite at the 1929 iconic Georgian Colonial designed by Eldridge Theodore (“Ted”) Spencer, a participating architect for Stanford University’s buildings and Yosemite's Ahwahnee Lodge. The upstairs of this gated home originally featured low-slung ceilings and dark compressed spaces. Ceilings were elevated, and a new outdoor deck was added to create an opulent indoor-outdoor retreat setting. The design was inspired by the feeling of standing on the deck of a freight ship. The room was completely customized by Cathleen including: ipe floors, refined grassello plaster walls, custom millwork, bespoke custom bedding, and custom lighting. It was the first known space in Marin to feature a Nanawall and create and indoor-outdoor living space. The space won the 2011 ASID Design Excellence Award for a Sustainable Residential Design Project. The Project Manager for the Homeowner commented, “25 designers were invited to participate in the Showcase house and my personal choice for the best designed room was Cathleen’s room. This sentiment was echoed by the many hundreds of visitors, family and friends that visited the home.”
